Every now and then I read an article that stays with me and shapes my thoughts and actions. The other day I received a newsletter from Mailbag Millionaire - a newsletter that helps small business use direct mail to grow their revenues. The front-page article caught me off guard and still rings in my mind.
Here's the story – Let me know if it does the same for you!
When the owner of Mailbag Millionaire was in middle school, he attended basketball camp every summer. His coaches were super strict and insisted on everything being done right.
No shortcuts allowed!
• If a camper was caught cutting across the grass - 10 pushups!
• If toothpaste residue was left in the sink - 10 pushups!
No Shortcuts Were Allowed - NONE!
The camp taught much more than basketball - It taught the important life skills of self-discipline and respect for others. How does this relate to you and your career as a salon professional?
Don't take shortcuts with your work!
• Do you keep your salon space clean overall, and sparkling for each new client?
• Do you arrive ahead of time to organize and prepare for the day?
• Do you take time for the consult and listen to what's being said?
• Do you keep in touch with clients in between appointments?
• Do you enroll in classes to stay current - and regularly attend?
As a salon professional, shortcuts can eat into your client retention and referrals. If you take a shortcut in areas like these, it could cost you a lot of business.
“Every beauty salon’s greatest asset is its clientele, because without clients, there is no salon.”
Your clients are the most important visitors to your salon. The purpose for your work, you depend on them – Their loyalty is priceless. It’s your job every day to make every aspect of the client experience a little bit better.
Create a great experience, and clients will tell each other about it. Word of mouth is very powerful.
Consistency Builds Trust
If you spend the time to plan your day, build a consistent brand experience, and stay current - with attention to detail and follow through, you'll have a strong foundation on which to build your reputation as a salon professional.
Once a high level of excellence becomes habit, you will become the master of your own fate!
ACTION STEP: Make a list right now of the ways that you might be "saving time" but losing clients and weakening your reputation.
The One Shortcut You CAN Take: If you want the freedom of owning your own salon and being the master of your own fate, there is a way you can have this now - without all of the start-up costs, employees to manage, and maintenance that overwhelms owners.
