unity, innovation, and excellence: my day at the inaugural BBR beauty expo in new york city

By Kelly Westbrook, VP of Member Development at My Salon Suite

At My Salon Suite, our mission has always been about empowering beauty professionals to thrive as independent business owners, supported by a strong, uplifting community. Last month, I had the absolute privilege of experiencing an event that embodied that exact spirit on an extraordinary scale: the inaugural BBR Beauty Expo presented by SalonCentric at Chelsea Industrial in New York City.

Having attended Black Beauty Roster (BBR) Creator events in the past, I already knew the caliber of education and intention they bring to the table. I’ve had the personal pleasure of knowing and working with Maude Okrah Hunter, CEO, Black Beauty Roster, for over 15 years. Seeing her vision come to life in this landmark tradeshow was nothing short of inspiring.

I was lucky enough to spend this incredible day alongside my friend and industry colleague, Angela Reich from Modern Salon. Together, we soaked in a day filled with energy, unity, and game-changing education.

a unified space for beauty professionals

What stood out most from the moment we walked in was the overwhelming sense of unity and community. The room was buzzing with celebrated celebrity stylists, leading beauty influencers, fashion professionals, dedicated salon owners, stylists, makeup artists, freelance artists and suite owners—all connected by a shared passion for artistry and industry excellence.

The vendor lineup and mainstage sessions were exceptional. The show gracefully bridged every aspect of our industry:

  • Professional-Only Brands: Leaders like Mizani, Oribe, DevaCurl, and L’Oréal Groupe offered high-level education, live technique demos, and masterclasses that beauty pros could take directly back to their chairs.
  • Direct-to-Consumer & Emerging Brands: Trailblazing brands (including Fenty Beauty, Pattern by Tracee Ellis Ross, Bask & Lather, and Danessa Myricks Beauty) highlighted affiliate opportunities, creator programs, and innovative product solutions.

Every single sponsor booth was designed to draw you in. The activations were interactive, engaging, and packed with generous, premium product samples. Enjoying the VIP experience allowed us to get up close with educators and brand pioneers who are actively shaping the future of texture education and inclusive beauty representation.

why this matters for suite owners and independent artists

As independent beauty professionals, staying inspired and continually expanding your toolkit is vital. Events like the BBR Expo prove that independence doesn’t mean standing alone. When we come together to share knowledge, celebrate texture diversity, and build business partnerships, the entire beauty ecosystem wins.

A huge thank you and congratulations to Maude Okrah Hunter, the Black Beauty Roster team, SalonCentric, and all the participating brands for establishing such an elevated, high-impact platform for our industry.
