AL Mayes is an award-winning Master Barber, educator, industry leader, and the owner of Mayes Barbering Atelier. Recognized for both his artistry and advocacy, Mayes has redefined the barbering experience as one that blends timeless craft, modern style, and holistic client care.
With close to 30 years of mastery behind the chair, AL is also certified in Psychohairapy, a specialized training that bridges grooming with emotional well-being. This unique expertise allows him to provide more than just a haircut—transforming the barbershop experience into a space where confidence, style, and self-expression thrive.
Beyond his work as a barber and business owner, Mayes has played an influential role in shaping the direction of the industry. He has served as 3rd Vice President of the National Association of Barber Boards of America (NABBA) and was appointed by former Virginia Governor Ralph Northam to serve as Vice Chairman & Board Member of the Virginia Board of Barbers and Cosmetology. Through these platforms, he helped set professional standards, influence policy, and advocate for barbers at both the state and national levels.
His contributions have been recognized through numerous awards and honors, including:
